Each vertebra articulates with the vertebra above and below it at three joints. These are the joint between the bodies, and the two zygoapophyseal joints (AKA apophyseal joints, posterior intervertebral joints, facet joints) which are between the inferior articular process of one vertebra and the superior articular process of the other. The two zygoapophyseal joints are synovial while the intervertebral joints are non-synovial.
